Mass of the Spadone and historical re-enactment

The Mass of the Spadone celebrates Epiphany in the Cathedral, and is one of the most evocative and impressive liturgical rites that the Church has preserved. It precedes a re-enactment, by hundreds of costumed figures, of the entry of Patriarch Marquardo von Randeck into Cividale in 1366.

 

Easter Sunday and Easter Monday

The Game of “Truc”

The traditional and ancient game of “Truc” is  unique to Cividale and is played only on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. Coloured eggs are rolled into a sand-filled sloped oval basin of traditional design . The rules are strict, and  the aim is to roll  the eggs so that they finish in close contact.

Mittelfest

A festival of prose, music, dance, poetry, visual arts and puppetry from Central European countries, this multi-cultural event is held every year in July. The theme is different each time, but performances featuring esteemed companies and artists from Central Europe are always at its core.

International Courses of Musical Proficiency

Cividale’s musical proficiency courses provide lessons to soloists and chamber musicians of any nationality or age, who may attend as actual students or as observers. They give the public an opportunity to listen to master teachers, celebrated guest musicians and some of the more talented students, at concerts held in many of the churches, villas and castles in the area.

The Palio of San Donato

A historical re-evocation of the celebrated tournament that was held in Cividale del Friuli from the 14th Century during the Festival of the Patron Saint. Cividale is transformed into a medieval city, with long, majestic processions of costumed characters roaming the streets of its historic centre and challenging each other in fierce duels and spectacular combats, while local favourites compete to win the trophy in the race for the Palio di San Donato.

Eastern Alps Rally and Eastern Alps Historic Rally

These events form part of the international rally circuit and attract drivers of renown to the two competitions, for both high-powered modern cars and historical models.

Cividale-Castelmonte Time trial

An international motoring contest along an uphill drive of 7 kilometres on the road between Cividale and the Sanctuary of Castelmonte.

 

November

San Martino

Traditional fair with market stalls. The Associazione Borgo di Ponte organises this colourful event to mark the feast day of San Martino (Saint Martin), who gives his name to the church by the Devil’s Bridge. During the course of the day the area around the Belvedere on the river Natisone and the streets and squares of the Borgo di Ponte (the Ponte district), are invaded by the stalls of a bustling market bursting with goods.

Christmas Festivities

Shows, hustle and bustle, and events of all kinds take place during December and early January in an atmosphere of holiday entertainment.

The Devil’s Trunk

A traditional antiques market (known locally as il baule del diavolo) occupies the main streets and squares of the historic central area. Exhibitors display a huge range of goods, some from Austria, and many more from other regions of Italy.

Weekly Market

A street market of various kinds of merchandise (food and other products) sets up in the squares and streets of the town centre.
