Tour around Mount Corona

Itinerary, Passo Pramollo - Casera Auernig - Casera For - Mount Corona - Sella Canizza - Casera For - Casera Auernig - Pramollo: pass Excursion time 4.00 hoursDegree of difficulty ExcursionResting points Hotels and eating places at the Pramollo passFrom Pramollo Pass (1530 m), near some hotels, take the comfortable forest road that goes up the base of the south slope of Mount Auernig passing through vast woody grazing areas. In a short time, you reach Casera Auernig (1609 m), a pasture located at the bottom of the mount with the same name and from which you can enjoy a wide view towards Mount Malvuerich (to the south). From here, proceeding along the comfortable forest road that descends for a brief section, you reach Casera For (1614 m), located near the suggestive pasture beneath Mount Corona . From here, leave the road and take trail C.A.I. 501. Once you have covered the pasture section and crossing an area characterised by shrubby vegetation with mountain pine, rhododendron and juniper, you reach the vast meadow peak of Mount Corona (1832 m), where there is a splendid view of the Austrian territory and all the mountains of the valle del Gail . Particularly interesting is the view of Mount Gartnerkofel and the underlying alpine summer pastures. From Mount Corona you go alongside the State border along a trail in the ridges that leads to Sella Canizza (1675 m). Sella Canizza is a large grassy depression between the Corona and the Canizza, which was once the shortest way from Pontebba to get to the large residential centre of Hermagor , in Carinthia , before the road of the Pramollo pass was built. From Sella, take the trail of the Italian slope, descending and returning to Casera For where you come to the forest road that leads to the Pramollo Pass again.MOUNT CARNIZZA - 1950 m (Alpine variant)For the experts, as an alternative to the descent at Casera For , it is recommended to proceed, from Sella Canizza , taking trail C.A.I. 501, which runs along the ridge, permitting a climb to Mount Canizza (1950 m) through a steep slope of mountain pine. The peak is a great partially grassy ridge that rises between the Pramollo Pass and Sella Canizza and can also be reached from the Austrian slope. From the peak of Mount Canizza follow the ridge along the State borderline until you reach the Selletta above Malga Auernig; from here, in a short time, you can descend to the Alpine summer pasture or go upwards to Mount Auernig . In both cases, the trails lead to the forest road and therefore to the Pramollo Pass.
