Coccau

Coccau, Vallo Littorio - Defensive works of the valico di Coccau (second half of the 1930s) The " Vallo Littorio " is a system of permanent fortifications that run from France to the Triest Karst. The works, implemented by the Italian army to defend the Alpine frontier during the years prior to the Second World War, is divided into groups located so as to defend from possible lines of enemy penetration, from the bottom of the valley up to the higher altitudes. Most of the structures, suitable for the new defensive requirements, remained in operation up to recent years. The individual posts are made in caverns or underground next to natural mounts; the structure is in considerably thick concrete, whereas on the outside only the firing holes and camouflaged entrances appear. To be pointed out in particular, are the defensive works located in the area between Tarvisio and the valico di Coccau , which were among the few to be involved in military events soon after 8 September 1943. These belonged to two defensive groups. The more advanced barrage (called Porticina) gravitated immediately next to the border, with works located on the sides of the Pontebbana highway, around the current customs vehicle port. More interesting is that built on the opposite side of the valley, in the area of Colma, which can be reached by means of the forest roads and which are: small barracks, a couple of posts and a rare example of anti-tank serrated rampart that goes a few hundred metres into the woods. The barrage of Coccau protected the valley in a more retreated position, but dominating thanks to the greater altitude. On the top of the hill, from where the Coccau rises, there are still a couple of constructions, whereas the others are located further down, along the section of the main road that is no longer used.
