The Middle Ages

Between 1006 and 1007 the Emperor Henry II The Saint, with the approval of the bishop princes of the empire, founded a chapter of temporal power entrusting it to the Bishop of Bamberga , in Bavaria. However, from the point of view of ecclesiastic jurisdiction, the entire Valcanale, together with other lands of the region of Carinthia - making up the Federaun Signory - belonged to the Patriarch of Aquileia. This period, justifiably referred to as the Bamberga-Aquileia period, does not end until 1759 , when the entire territory of the Signory is transferred to the house of Austria, which is under the rule of the Empress Maria Theresa. This is a period covering over seven centuries of an existence that is at times troubled and at times calm and serene, under the benign rule of the bishops of Bamberga on the one hand and the spiritual administration of the Patriarchs of Aquileia on the other. After some time new peoples arrive in this territory; they are populations of Austro-German, Friulan and Venetian origin . Thus, the valley sees the gradual creation of a situation where agriculture is predominant in the Slovene villages, whereas industry and commerce are for the most part run by German and Italic groups. Invasions and passing armies descend many times upon the town and the valley to devastate them during the Bamberga-Aquileia period . There are also nine raids by Turkish hordes between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th.
