Austria's Return

The people slowly recover. Life continues peacefully Once the Napoleonic earthquake had passed, the people slowly recover. Life continues peacefully, with the small village events; but the ancient vitality and well being did not return for a long time. Tarvisio remained the fulcrum of the valley: the forest administration management, the tax offices, the magistrate's court with the registers. In time, new families appear and they make their way. Trade picks up, with the help of industry, which proceeds at a considerable pace. In 1851, the new national road is started to replace the old Roman road, then in 1872 and 1879 the two railway lines are opened to traffic towards Italy and Ljubljana. With this Valcanale opens up a new lift, with an atmosphere of modern times. The first holidaymakers also arrive to admire the beauty and healthiness of nature. The Sanctuary of Lussari always attracts new and more worshippers. With a wise, moderate and paternal administration, the Hapsburg Emperor brings the populations closer, linking them to his destiny with love and loyalty. In 1909 Emperor Francesco Giuseppe promotes Tarvisio to becoming a City, confirming, in this way, the economic and social growth of not only the centre, but of the whole valley. These were years of prosperity that were interrupted by the First World War breaking out. Bombardments, evacuations and escape, military occupation, poverty with the passing of troops and finally, the conclusion of a world that was destined to last for ever had disappeared. With the Saint Germane peace treaty Valcanale passes over to Italy.
