Great feats of mountaineering A considerable contribution to knowledge about the Julian Alps is given at the beginning of the 1900s by Gestirner , who, after years of surveys, published a monograph in the DOAV journal (the Austrian, German Alpine Club) arranging the cartography, toponyms and the history of the climbs accomplished up until then. The Austrian engineer Ferdinand Horn is again mentioned. Among the most significant routes traced out, are those on the north west slope of Mount Jalovec (1909) and that on the west side of Montasio (1911). Worth mentioning is Carlo Chersi . Son of a magistrate, who finished his classical studies and became a lawyer. He started to take interest in mountaineering around the age of twenty, fascinated by the suggestive setting that the mountain can offer. In 1909 he entered the Alpina delle Giulie with students from the University Section and immediately distinguished himself for his activism as well as for the résumés of his climbs. In 1912 he was called to be a member of the society's management. Entrusted with editing the Alpi Giulie journal, he managed it with an enthusiasm that had not been seen before. In 1921 Chersi takes on the presidency of the Alpina, which he holds for 39 years. Under his management an enormous job was carried out. For example, the society, which in 1921, did not have any shelters whatsoever, in 1939 owned 12 huts and had opened a network of trails that went from Cuel della Barretta to the Tricorno. His work was irreplaceable, even after the second World War, when the club, which was shocked by the happenings of war, was built up again. During the first World Work, many climbs were accomplished, especially by the Austrians. One of their chaplains, Hans Klug , together with Hans Stagl , opened many routes through which there are the most beautiful classics of average difficulty in the western Julian Alps, such as the northern corner of Cima Alta di Riobianco and the north eastern corner of Jof Fuart.
