During the course of the year a multitude of shows and events fill and enliven the city’s streets and squares. On January 6 the Mass of the Spadone is celebrated at the Cathedral, in a centuries-old traditional ceremony of great religious and political significance. The spadone (a large sword) used in the celebration once belonged to Patriarch Marquardo di Randeck, and dates back to 1366. Mass is followed by a splendid historical re-enactment of the worthy Patriarch’s entry into Cividale, in which a magnificent medieval pageant winds through the city’s streets. On Easter Sunday and Monday citizens turn to play Truc, a traditional game played with coloured eggs. July is the month of the renowned Mittelfest, a festival of prose, music, dance, poetry, visual arts and puppetry from the countries of Central Europe.

The Palio di San Donato tournament in August carries us back to the Middle Ages once again , with a sumptuous costume procession re-evoking the ancient race that was held on the Patron Saint’s day. Then, as now, the various city districts would compete in archery and crossbow contests, races, and many other events. The life of the city is enriched throughout the year by a multitude of shows and events; a visitor arriving on the fourth Sunday of the month is sure to run across the thriving stalls of the Baule del Diavolo antiques market, while the weekly market is held on Saturday mornings.

If Cividale can boast its art, its culture, and its food and wine, so can the surrounding areas. A few kilometres away lies an enchanting new world. Walkers and cyclists may well find themselves among gentle hill slopes that have been shaped by the labours of generations of vine growers. Or they may discover natural landscapes; the Natisone Valleys, lower down the river that flows through Cividale, are the setting for small centres rich in tradition and nature. Near to the municipality of Prepotto lies the soaring ancient Sanctuary of Castelmonte, the home of the venerated 15th Century statue of the Madonna and Child and hundreds of votary offerings, many dating back to the 16th Century.

A trip to the San Giovanni d’Antro cave in Pulfero is a special delight that should not be missed. The cave was inhabited in pre-historic times, and in the 15th Century a beautiful little gothic chapel was carved into the rock face within. Nature lovers are sure to enjoy a relaxing break at the Bosco Romagno natural park; its exercise trail and large games area are ideal for families with children.
