Maja

This is a tradition, which is disappearing in other communities, like many others. Nevertheless it is still celebrated with passion in Camporosso. In this area, the trunk "of May" (maja), is a symbol of fertility; the forces of spring are personified in the tree of life. This tree is, in fact, called "of May" or "of Pentecost". The "Maibaum" is erected near the church, in the evening, on the eve of Corpus Christi. It is usually done by the eighteen year-olds or however by the youngsters. The plant (the trunk of a spruce without its bark) was once dragged to the site by oxen with the characteristic harness, today it is less suggestive as it is brought up by a tractor. Important is the fact that the trunk must be taken around the town before arriving at its final destination. It is like a procession, ideally to involve everyone in the rite and in its good omens. The ceremony takes place like this: the tip of a spruce is grafted into the trunk and a crown (Kranz), made from the branches of the same plant is attached to the trunk; then, young ladies of the same age who are involved in the festivities ornate both the tip and the crown.  The plant is then erected, sprinkled with wine by the young men who then start to climb it, in the attempt to touch the "Kranz".  The rite has clear sexual allusions (the young ladies once used to predict their possible marriage.  For the young men, however, it was a demonstration of their ability).
