Perchta

The tradition takes place the night of 5 January, before the arrival of the three kings. It is particularly suggestive in Camporosso.  The local people consider it one of the coldest and most mysterious nights of the year, but it is still one of the most fascinating. At dusk, about eight to ten young boys, from the age of ten to sixteen, gather along the road that cuts through the town.  They all have bells.  Once they have gathered, they start to run along the road, ringing the bells violently.  They do not shout and do not pronounce any words, they just run and ring.  When they reach the end of the village, where there was once a cross, then return composedly, in silence.  Some stop and knock on doors to receive a gift, but people are reluctant to open up. At one time, the young boys used to receive dried pears, apples, broad beans and nuts.  The running has a symbolic meaning, it is to drive PECHTRA BABA, a nasty and evil female spirit (similar to the Befana) out of town. The day after, on 6 January, the bells used for the race were then taken to the loft or the barn and put around the cows' necks for superstitious reasons.
