Skiing

No nation has a longer tradition of skiing; we wear our skis from the cradle. With skis on our feet we do more than just ski: we party, we mingle, and we meet old friends and new. And sometimes when we meet, we remain together for life.

Kranjska Gora, where the world championships are held, is the principal Slovenian centre for alpine skiing and ski jumping (at Planica). Bohinj has three ski zones (Vogel, Kobla and Soriska Planina), while Bovec is the only location in Slovenia where pistes can be found at heights of over 2000 metres. A map showing all the pistes is available. The best known centre for cross country skiing is Pokljuka, which is in reach of both Bled and Bohinj, but it is also a thrilling experience to ski on the mountain slopes of the Tamare Valley.

A still greater pleasure is to sleigh ride down snow covered tracks at Kranjska Gora (Tromeja – the "three borders"), Bovec (Mangrt) and Bohinj (Vogar). The greatest thrill of all is to ski in complete solitude high above a mountain face, where, for obvious safety reasons, the presence of an Alpine guide is essential.
