Helleborus niger (Christmas Rose)

The Latin name: "Elleboro nero", as opposed to the pleasant white flowers of this species, refers to the black colour of the rhizome (the horizontal underground stem). Its common name "Christmas Rose " is given due to the fact that the buds are already under the snow even during the months of December-January.

Warning: the plant is poisonous like the other species of the Ranunculaceae family to which it belongs!
